    January 2010 ~ Newsletter #3A

HAITI

Many concerned friends are looking for ways to volunteer in Haiti but opportunities are almost non-existent at the moment.  Those organizations that may be recruiting are looking for volunteers with technical skills in health care or other disaster relief experience. See below.

Volunteers for Peace hopes to resume volunteer projects in Haiti as soon as possible but realistically that may not be for awhile since our Haitian partner’s volunteer facility was damaged and the country is in crisis.

In past years, VFP has offered a variety of projects in Haiti, including working with children and youth, teaching, and environmental projects. Disaster relief projects, however, often involve clean-up and rebuilding, too.

If you are interested in being contacted when those opportunities present, send your email address to vfp@vfp.org with the word Haiti in the subject field. You will be notified by email when projects are available. If you have already contacted VFP about volunteering in Haiti, and received an e-mail reply, we have your email address saved.

In addition:

Nurses may register at RNRN Disaster Relief

Nurses and Doctors may register at
Doctors Without Borders

Partners in Health reports they are recruiting surgeons, anesthetists, nurses and other medical professionals to travel to Haiti to help with staffing in the very near future. PIH has worked in Haiti for decades.  Visit http://www.pih.org/home.html or email the volunteer coordinator at volunteer@pih.org.
